Who We Are

Hi, I’m Kira — the maker behind The Hemmingbird.

The Hemmingbird is my little corner of the world for slow stitches, bold ideas, and handmade things that are meant to be used, loved, and carried everywhere.

I’ve always been a maker at heart. Sewing gives me the chance to take beautiful fabrics, interesting textures, and a pile of seemingly unrelated pieces and turn them into something completely new. What started as a creative outlet grew into The Hemmingbird: a handmade small business built around the things I genuinely love to make.

Made by hand. Made to be used.

Every sewn piece you find here is made by me, one at a time, in Central New York. From cutting fabric and choosing coordinating prints to stitching, pressing, assembling, and adding the final hardware, these aren't products coming off an assembly line.

They're made at my sewing machine.

I gravitate toward bold color, unexpected fabric combinations, whimsical details, and pieces that are as useful as they are fun. You’ll find bags, pouches, wallets, accessories, project bags, and plenty of other creations as The Hemmingbird continues to grow.

Because I work in small batches, inventory is always changing. Sometimes there may only be one of something—and once a particular fabric is gone, that exact combination may be gone with it.

A creative family affair

While I'm the one behind the sewing machine, The Hemmingbird isn't entirely a solo adventure.

My husband has joined in on the making, too, bringing 3D printing into the mix and helping turn some of my ideas into physical pieces. That collaboration has let us experiment with products for fellow makers—especially knitters and crocheters—and gives me an excuse to keep dreaming up things that don't necessarily involve a sewing machine.

Behind the scenes, there’s also a whole family putting up with fabric everywhere, late-night sewing sessions, market prep taking over the house, and the occasional “I just need to finish one more thing.”

Why “The Hemmingbird”?

The name is a little nod to both sewing and the constant motion of making.

Much like its tiny, perpetually busy namesake, The Hemmingbird is rarely sitting still. There’s usually something being stitched, tested, redesigned, dreamed up, or added to the ever-growing list of things I want to make next.

This business is still taking flight, and that's part of the fun.

Thanks for being here.

When you shop handmade, you're supporting so much more than the finished item. You're supporting the hours spent learning a craft, experimenting with new ideas, choosing materials, fixing mistakes, preparing for markets, and building a small business piece by piece.

Whether you found The Hemmingbird at a local market, stumbled across me online, or have been following along from the beginning, I'm genuinely glad you're here.

I hope you find something that feels a little bit like you.

Made with care in Central New York.
Slow stitches & bold starts.
